US Sheriffs Urge Citizens To Buy Guns

US Sheriffs Urge Citizens To Buy Guns
http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/12/us/sheriffs-urge-citizens-buy-guns/index.html

With the recent terrorist attacks, (Paris, Colorado Springs, and San Bernardino) sheriffs around the country are calling on citizens to arm themselves. In Brevard County, Florida, Sheriff Wayne Ivey was one of the first to post a video on Facebook with a message saying, "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun." He repeatedly cautioned against vigilante justice. He made sure that gun owners knew that he wanted them to engage anyone who threatens harm through terrorism or mass killings. He is confident that responsible gun owners with concealed weapons permits will partner with them in stopping an active shooter before the police arrive on the scene. "We want you to be prepared to defend yourself, to protect you and your family," he said. This video has been viewed by more than 4 million people. Marion County Sheriff Chris Blair also decided to post a video with a similar message. Many other sheriffs are giving out statements about this. They all think that it is a good idea.

I think that this is a great idea. It is our right to own a gun. If we are able to protect ourselves and our family from treats such as terrorism or mass attacks, I think that we should. These sheriffs are trying to make the United States a lot safer for the citizens, but they are asking for our help too. They understand that they can't do it alone, so they are asking for help. I believe that anybody who is responsible enough to have a gun, should carry one on them at all times. You never know when something will happen.

Jimmy Carter is Cancer Free

Miracle or Science?
http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/06/health/jimmy-carter-cancer-doctor-interview/?iid=ob_homepage_deskrecommended_pool&iref=obnetwork

Former president, Jimmy Carter announced to his Sunday school class at Maranatha Baptist Church that he is cancer free. In August, Carter announced that he had a deadly form of skin cancer in his liver and his brain. He was treated via surgery, radiation and a new form of immunotherapy. Carter stated, "My most recent MRI brain scan did not reveal any signs of the original cancer spots nor any new ones. I will continue to receive regular three-week immunotherapy treatments of pembrolizumab."

I think that this is important because, first off, the technology that they used was really important. I think that we could use this for a lot of different types of cancers. Also it's important because Jimmy Carter was a former president, he is a part of our history.

Portraits Hidden Under Mona Lisa

"Mona Lisa": Hidden Portraits Found Underneath
http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/08/world/mona-lisa-hidden-portrait/index.html

A french scientist, Pascal Cotte, says that he has revealed three hidden paintings beneath the surface of Leonardo de Vinci's Mona Lisa. One of the paintings could most likely be the real portrait of Lisa del Giocondo, the woman who is thought to be the subject of the painting. The hidden picture shows a woman looking into the distance. The scientist used a multispectral camera to project intense lights on the painting while measuring the reflections. This helps expose what happened between the paint layers.

I think that this is really important. First off, the scientist used a new type of technology to find the paint layers. I think that that is very important because now, with this new technology, we can look at other famous paintings and see what the artist did before they created their masterpiece. I think that this is really interesting because it's a part of our history. The Mona Lisa is a very well known piece and it's also very poetical. I think that with there being more portraits underneath, we can figure out why De Vinci actually painted her. It gives the painting a whole new outlook. I think that it's wonderful.

NASA Releases Clearest Images of Pluto

NASA Releases Clearest Images of Pluto

NASA released black and white photographs of the clearest close-ups of Pluto's surface that we will be able to see for decades. The images were taken by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft. The pictures show craters, mountains and glacial terrain. The images stretch from Pluto's horizon (about 800 kilometers northwest of Sputnik Planum) across the al-ldrisi mountains, over the shoreline of Sputnik and across its icy plains. New Horizons flew by Pluto in July of 2015.

I think that this is really important, because even though Pluto isn't a planet anymore, we are still researching it and trying to figure out how it works compared to the Earth. I think that it is important to be up to date with our solar system because there is so much out there that we haven't discovered yet. It's very interesting to learn about the new things that they find in outer space.

Cambodia HIV Outbreak

Unlicensed Cambodian Doctor Jailed For Mass HIV Outbreak
http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/03/asia/cambodia-hiv-outbreak-doctor-sentenced/index.html

An Cambodian doctor, who is unlicensed, has been put in jail for 25 years after being convicted of infecting more than 100 people with the HIV virus. His name is Yem Chroeum was found guilty of infecting people in northwestern Battambang province with HIV by reusing dirty needles. This case has highlighted a problem in rural parts of Cambodia, where unlicensed doctors are the only option for medical care. Almost 4,000 illegal health-service providers are operating in Cambodia. UNAIDS estimates that there are 76,000 people living with HIV in Cambodia.

I think that this is important because there has been a lot more talk about the HIV virus. It's not just a problem in the United States, it's a problem in the entire world. There are countries, like Cambodia, that can't help the people because they don't have the proper licensed doctors there. I think that we should send doctors over to those countries and try to help. This way we can lower the rate of infections and help fight aids. Also, we need to make sure that we do everything we can do to keep the HIV virus under control.

U.S. Marine Found Guilty of Killing A Transgender Woman In Philippines

U.S. Marine Found Guilty of Killing A Transgender Woman In Philippines

A Marine from the United States was found guilty of strangling a transgender in the Philippines. The court in Olongapo sentenced Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pamberton up to 12 years in prison. The naked body of Jeffrey Laude, otherwise known as Jennifer, was found with her head in a toilet in a hotel room after midnight in October 2014. Witnesses told the police that the two were seen together at a disco club before they checked into a hotel room for the night. Later on that night, he was identified as Laude's companion that night. Pamberton told the police that he had choked her, but later tried to revive her. He stated that he had become angry with Laude when he found out that she had male genitalia. The court ordered him to be temporarily detained at the New Bilibid Prison.

I think that this is important because there are a lot of people in our world who are transgender or somewhere along those lines. I think that what Pamberton was very wrong of him to do so, but I can understand why he would get angry. Laude didn't tell him that she had male genitalia, which was very wrong to do so. I think that this will happen a lot for the years to come because there are people who are against transgender. Some people will kill or harm a transgender person just because they're transgender. It's wrong, but that's what happens. I think that we need to fix this. We have already legalized marriage equality in the nation, but I think that we need to take it a step further.

Virunga Park Gorillas Conservation

Can clean energy save the gorillas of Virunga National Park?

Virunga National Park is in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mountain gorillas found here share 98% of their DNA with humans. A common cold could have consequences for this troop of gorillas. There are only about 800 of these gorillas left in the wild. There are people here who will hunt and kill some of the gorillas. In 2007, four were killed. This caused a world-wide reaction and the Congolese authorities felt the pressure to make a change. The Matebe hydroelectric plant is being planted for the gorillas so it can bring sustainable energy to the region for the first time.

I think that this is important because there are a lot of animals in our world that are going extinct and we can't do much to help them. But finding a plant that can help bring back energy to the regions that those animals are going extinct, we can start saving the animals. Animals are very important to our world.
